Care Guide
Furniture Care Guide
At Samurai Home, our furniture is made with great care, using traditional craftsmanship and fine natural materials. Each piece is unique, with variations in grain, colour, knots, and shading that give it character and authenticity. With mindful use and simple care, these designs will bring comfort and beauty to your home for years to come.
Daily Care
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
- For deeper cleaning, wipe lightly with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry immediately with a lint-free cloth.
- Use beeswax polish sparingly to nourish wood (avoid silicone-based polishes, which leave a film).
- For glass or mirror insets, use a non-solvent cleaner and a soft cloth, carefully avoiding adjoining wood or painted sections.
Protection
- Always use mats, trivets, and coasters to guard against heat, moisture, and stains.
- Keep furniture at least 30 cm away from radiators or heat sources and protect from prolonged direct sunlight.
- Move accessories from time to time to avoid “shadow marks” caused by light exposure.
- Use felt pads under legs to protect delicate flooring.
- Never place hot electrical items such as laptops directly on wooden surfaces, as prolonged heat may cause scorching.
Care Precautions
- Avoid dropping furniture onto its corners or legs—this can damage frames.
- Leaning back on two legs of a chair can weaken joints.
- Prevent scratches by keeping sharp objects, toys, buckles, and heels away from surfaces.
- Avoid contact with cosmetics, perfumes, or household chemicals that may affect finishes.
- For stains, chips, or scratches, we recommend professional restoration.
Wood Movement & Levelling
- Solid wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. This may occasionally make drawers or doors feel stiffer.
- A little candle wax on drawer runners will help them slide smoothly.
- Ensure your furniture sits on a level surface so doors hang and open properly.
- Many products are fitted with adjustable hinges or wedges to realign doors if required.
- If the piece is moved, levelling should be checked again, and adjustments made if needed.
Assembly & Moving
- Large sectional or multi-piece furniture should be disassembled before relocation.
- Self-assembly items should be built in their intended room and carefully lifted into place.
- Always lift—never drag—furniture, as dragging can damage joints and flooring.
- For heavy items, we recommend two people to move and position safely.
Sunlight & Heat
- Direct sunlight will naturally alter the colour of wood, even through paint or lacquer.
- Decorative objects left in one place may create lighter or darker patches; these usually blend in with time.
- A minimum clearance of 30 cm from heat sources is advised to prevent cracking or warping.
- Never place hot dishes, mugs, or cookware directly on surfaces—always use coasters, mats, or trivets.
Natural Wood Characteristics
Wood is a living material with its own distinctive markings and qualities. These are not flaws, but part of what makes each piece unique:
- Grain & Colour Variation: No two pieces are alike; every board shows its own pattern.
- Knots: Naturally occurring and do not affect performance.
- Medullary Rays: Beautiful flecks or rings appear when wood is cut across the grain.
- Shading: Expect gentle differences in tone within a single piece or across a collection.
Upholstery Care Guide (Fabric)
At Samurai Home, our upholstered pieces are designed for comfort and longevity. With regular care, your sofa or chair will maintain its beauty and feel for many years. Fabric is a natural, tactile material, and with everyday use, it will soften, crease, and take on character — these are part of its charm.
General Care
- Vacuum upholstery weekly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and grit.
- Rotate and plump cushions regularly to keep their shape and distribute wear evenly.
- Fibre-filled pads should be plumped daily; once a week, stand the pad on its edge and beat it inwards with the flat of your hand, then shake and replace.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, undyed cloth — never rub, as this can spread the stain or damage fibres.
- Remove household dust and dirt periodically with gentle brushing or vacuuming to prevent premature fading and wear.
Cleaning Codes
Most upholstery fabrics carry a cleaning code, which indicates the safest method for spot cleaning:
- W: Spot clean with water-based solutions or upholstery foam only.
- S: Use solvent-based cleaners only (no water).
- SW: Use either mild water-based or solvent-based cleaners.
- X: Vacuum or brush only — no liquids or cleaning agents.
Protection
- Position furniture at least 30 cm away from radiators or direct heat sources.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause fading or weakening of fibres.
- Keep sharp objects such as toys, buckles, and heels away from fabrics to avoid snags and tears.
- Pets should be discouraged from climbing or clawing upholstery, as this may cause lasting damage.
- Avoid air pollutants (like cigarette smoke or cooking fumes), which can discolour fabrics over time.
Professional Care
- For deep or set-in stains, consult a professional upholstery cleaner. They are equipped to treat delicate fabrics without risk.
- We recommend cleaning coordinated items (like sofas and matching chairs) at the same time to maintain a consistent appearance.
- Some fabrics may pill with use; this is normal. A fabric shaver may be used occasionally to remove surface pills, which will reduce over time.
Leather Upholstery Care Guide
Leather is a living, natural material. Each hide carries unique markings — creases, scars, growth lines, or subtle shade variations — which are not flaws but part of its authenticity. With use, leather softens, moulds to your body, and develops a rich patina that only adds to its character over time.
Regular Care
- Dust frequently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Wipe occasionally with an undyed cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to restore moisture.
- Condition periodically with a wax-free leather cream or balm (always test first in a hidden area).
- Avoid over-conditioning, which may cause a sticky residue.
Spills & Stains
- Oil or grease: Blot gently with a clean, undyed cloth. Do not rub, as this can push the oil deeper.
- Liquid spills: Blot immediately. Clean with mild soap and distilled water, then wipe again with distilled water to remove residue. Allow to air-dry naturally, away from heat.
- General rule: Never scrub, use abrasives, or apply household detergents, solvents, or cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, or silicone.
Protection & Precautions
- Keep leather furniture at least 30 cm away from radiators or direct heat sources.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can dry and fade leather.
- Do not place hot objects such as cups, laptops, or bottles directly on leather.
- Prevent scratches by keeping sharp objects, buckles, toys, or pet claws away.
- Avoid contact with cosmetics, perfumes, hair products, and chemicals, which can permanently stain or damage the surface.
- Discourage pets from climbing or scratching leather upholstery.
Ageing Gracefully
- Leather naturally stretches and develops creases with use — this is expected and does not affect performance.
- Lighter leathers may show marks more visibly, while distressed or waxed finishes highlight natural character with time.
- Minor surface scratches can often be softened by gently massaging the leather to redistribute natural oils.
Rugs & Cotton Dhurries Care Guide
Samurai Home rugs and dhurries are crafted with fine natural fibres and traditional weaving techniques. With proper care, they will add warmth, texture, and
character to your home for years.
General Care
- Vacuum weekly using a brushless attachment, moving in one direction only. Avoid back-and-forth vacuuming, which can pull fibres loose.
- Rotate rugs every 3 months to balance wear and fading from sunlight or foot traffic.
- Use rug pads to minimise slipping, reduce wear, and protect both rug and flooring.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, undyed cloth, mild soap, and lukewarm water. Always blot from the outside in — never rub, as this may damage fibres or spread stains.
Wool Rugs
- Shedding is normal, especially in the first 3–6 months of use.
- Regular vacuuming will help minimise loose fibres.
- Clean with wool-safe products only.
Natural FibreRugs (Jute, Sisal, Hemp)
- Vacuum gently on a low suction setting, using the upholstery attachment.
- These fibres are highly absorbent and should be kept away from moisture.
- For spills, blot quickly; do not soak.
Performance Rugs
- Designed for durability, these rugs can be spot-cleaned with mild detergent and water.
- For stubborn stains, some performance fibres allow diluted bleach solutions (always follow manufacturer guidance).
- During monsoon or winter, store indoors to prolong life and prevent mould or mildew.
Viscose & Viscose Blends
- Best suited for low-traffic areas.
- Highly absorbent: avoid placing where spills are likely.
- Blot stains with foam from a mild detergent solution; never rub or oversaturate.
Sheepskin & Hide Rugs
- Shake out regularly to remove dust and debris.
- Vacuum with suction only — never use a beater brush.
- Avoid wet cleaning; if stained, consult a professional cleaner.
Cotton Dhurries
- Lightweight and versatile, cotton dhurries benefit from frequent rotation to prevent uneven wear.
- Vacuum weekly using a low suction setting.
- For spot cleaning, blot gently with a mild detergent and water solution; do not scrub.
- Many cotton dhurries can be professionally dry cleaned for deeper care.
Outdoor Furniture Care Guide
Samurai Home outdoor furniture is crafted to endure the elements while offering comfort and style. With a little care and protection, these pieces will maintain their
beauty and functionality season after season.
General Tips
- Cover or store outdoor furniture during the monsoon, winter, and periods of harsh sunlight to extend its life.
- Always dry thoroughly before covering or storing to prevent mould and mildew.
- In coastal or salt-air environments, rinse weekly with fresh water to remove salt deposits that can damage finishes.
- Avoid letting water pool on surfaces or cushions.
All-Weather Wicker
- Rinse with a hose regularly to remove dust and dirt.
- For a deeper clean, wash with mild soap and water using a soft brush.
- Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth after cleaning.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, which may damage the weave.
Teak (Natural)
- Fresh teak has a warm golden hue, which will naturally weather to a silvery-grey patina when left outdoors.
- To maintain colour, clean periodically with a soft-bristle brush and mild soap.
- Natural teak will develop surface oils; this is normal and can be wiped away.
Teak (Finished)
- Finished teak has a protective coating but will gradually fade with outdoor exposure.
- Protect with covers when not in use to slow down weathering.
- Expect minor imperfections and natural changes over time.
Aluminium (Powder-Coated)
- Clean with mild soap and water using a soft cloth.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or hard impacts, which can chip or scratch the coating.
- Do not drag metal pieces across rough surfaces.
Stone & Concrete Surfaces
- Clean with a damp cloth, mild soap, and water. Dry immediately.
- Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar, citrus, bleach, or ammonia, which can damage the surface.
- Use coasters and trivets to protect from water rings, stains, or scorching.
- Be mindful not to chip edges when moving.
Cushions & Fabrics
- Store indoors during heavy rain or when not in use for prolonged periods.
- Brush off dust weekly with a soft-bristle brush; vacuum occasionally.
- Spot clean with mild soap and lukewarm water; rinse thoroughly to remove residue.
- Allow cushions to air-dry completely before reuse; do not machine dry.
- Rotate cushions regularly to even out wear.
Lighting Care Guide
Lighting is more than function — it sets the mood and highlights the beauty of your home. Samurai Home lighting is crafted with care and designed to last. With simple maintenance, your fixtures will continue to glow beautifully for years.
Bulbs
- Incandescent Bulbs: Provide a warm, inviting light and work well with dimmers. They have a shorter lifespan (around 3,000 hours) and are best for decorative or occasional use.
- ·Energy-Saving Tips:
o Make the most of natural daylight by positioning furniture near windows.
o Use task lighting (table and floor lamps) where focused light is needed, instead of relying only on ceiling lights.
o Choose energy-efficient bulbs such as LEDs, which last longer and consume less power.
- Always follow fixture guidelines for the correct bulb type, wattage, and fitting (e.g., E27).
Fixtures
- Shades & Bases: Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent build-up.
- Glass Components: Use a non-ammonia glass cleaner with a soft cloth for a streak-free finish.
- Avoid Abrasives: Do not use harsh chemicals, rough sponges, or cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, or solvents, as these may damage finishes.
- Positioning: Keep fixtures clear of damp or excessively hot areas, unless designed for those environments.
